How much gold loan can I get per gram? RBI's rules explained

By the LoanReveal team · Updated 13 October 2026 · 5 min read

Short answer: lenders value only the gold content at a 22-carat benchmark price, then lend up to a percentage of that value set by RBI: 85% for loans up to ₹2.5 lakh, 80% up to ₹5 lakh, and 75% above that.

At a 22-carat rate of ₹14,000 a gram, 30 grams of 22-carat jewellery is worth ₹4,20,000, and you could borrow up to about ₹3,36,000 on EMI repayment, about ₹11,200 per gram.

How your gold is valued

  • Only the gold counts. Stones, wax, lac and other materials are deducted, so the "net weight" is often less than the jewellery's total weight.
  • Purity matters. Value is worked out at the 22-carat benchmark price and adjusted for purity, so 18-carat gold is worth 18/22 of the 22-carat rate.
  • The benchmark price is typically the lower of the previous day's closing price and the 30-day average from a recognised source such as the India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA).

RBI's loan-to-value limits

Under RBI's directions on lending against gold and silver, in force from 1 April 2026, the maximum loan for consumption purposes depends on the loan size:

Loan amountMaximum loan-to-value
Up to ₹2.5 lakh85%
Above ₹2.5 lakh up to ₹5 lakh80%
Above ₹5 lakh75%

For bullet loans (everything repaid at the end), the interest due at maturity also has to fit within the limit, so you can borrow a little less, and the tenure can be at most 12 months.

Worked example: 30 grams, three ways to repay

30 grams of 22-carat gold at ₹14,000 a gram, 10% interest, 12 months:

Value of the gold₹4,20,000
EMI: maximum loan₹3,36,000
EMI: monthly instalment₹29,540
EMI: total interest₹18,477
Interest-only: monthly interest₹2,800
Interest-only: total interest₹33,600
Bullet: maximum loan₹3,05,454
Bullet: due at the end₹3,35,999
Same weight in 18-carat: maximum loan (EMI)₹2,74,909

EMI repayment costs the least interest because the principal falls every month. Bullet and interest-only loans charge interest on the full amount for the whole tenure.

Other rules worth knowing

  • You can pledge up to 1 kg of gold ornaments and up to 50 grams of gold coins across all lenders.
  • Gold bars and biscuits (primary gold) cannot be pledged.
  • Once you repay in full, the lender must return your gold within 7 working days, or pay you ₹5,000 for each day of delay.
  • If you can't repay, the lender can auction the gold after giving due notice, and must return any surplus after recovering its dues.

Frequently asked questions

How much gold loan can I get on 10 grams?

Multiply 10 grams by the 22-carat rate, adjust for purity, then apply the LTV limit. For 22-carat gold at ₹14,000 a gram, that's ₹1.4 lakh of value and up to about ₹1.19 lakh of loan at 85%. Lenders' actual rates and deductions vary.

Is a gold loan cheaper than a personal loan?

Usually yes, because it's secured by your gold. But compare the full cost including processing and valuation fees, and remember the risk of losing the gold if you can't repay.
